Mary Holt Bunch 1919 – 2014

She was born April 8, 1919, in Goldsboro, N.C., to the late Dr. & Mrs. Samuel C. Holt. She was married to the late Dr. William O. Bunch for 57 1/2 years. Mrs. Bunch received her formal education in Goldsboro, N.C.; undergraduate, A.B. Degree, Shaw University, Raleigh, N.C.; MA Degree; Teachers College, Columbia University, N.Y., N.Y. Her teaching career spanned 39 yrs. Mrs. Bunch was the first African American faculty member to teach at Florida Southern College, Lakeland, in the summer of 1967. She retired from the Polk County School System in 1979. Her civic and social involvement are numerous. Mrs. Bunch was an active member of the Lakeland Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was initiated as a Delta in Shaw University in 1935. She was a charter member of Tampa Alumnae Chapter and Lakeland Alumnae Chapter.
