Our Jabberwock

Jabberwock is an extravaganza that highlights a variety of talent acts and has been identified with Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. since 1925.  The Ladies of Lakeland Alumnae have enjoyed carrying on this traditional scholarship fundraiser for forty-two (42) years with over 38 successful pageant shows! The first Jabberwock sponsored by the Chapter was in 1978. The theme was “If I Ruled the World.” The first Little Miss Jabberwock crowned was Queen Deanne Woodard from Bartow and the first Miss Jabberwock crowned was Queen Tenesia Moore also from Bartow.

JABBERWOCK Sponsored by Lakeland Alumane Chapter

Members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority select young ladies to participate as contestants representing three groups – Delta, Sigma, and Theta. The young ladies are between the ages of 6 to 13.  Each contestant raises money by soliciting ads and sponsorships from businesses, family and friends. Contestants also participate in fundraising activities to raise money. All the young ladies who participate in Jabberwock are winners.

Participants compete for scholarship awards. Scholarship payout checks will be made payable to the contestants. The scholarship payout structure is below.

  • The winner receives 25% of the amount raised and will be crowned Miss Jabberwock
  • The 1st runner up receives 15% of the amount raised and
  • The 2nd Runner up receives 10% of the amount

In addition to the scholarships, every contestant and their escorts will receive a gift of appreciation.

Contestants are also eligible to apply for additional scholarships from the Lakeland Alumnae Chapter when she is accepted to a technical school, college or university.

Each year we change the theme of the Jabberwock Scholarship pageant to make it creative and fun for not only the contestants and escorts, but for the talent performers as well.  It provides us with a unified theme to work around.
